Homemade Dulce de Leche

I'm not sure why I've put this off for so long...

I saw a post on my favorite cupcake blog, Cupcake Project, where she made the simplest version of dulce de leche I have ever seen! And the best part? I didn't even have to stir!

All I needed:
  1. One {or two} cans of Sweetened Condensed Milk
  2. Crockpot filled with Water
Yup - that's it! Well, and 8 hours!

I placed my can of condensed milk (with the paper wrapper removed) in my crockpot...completely covered the can with water...and turned it on low. 8 hours later, I woke up to this smooth, rich and creamy dulce de leche!

I have never had the homemade version and wasn't a big fan of store bought, but if I was going to trust anyone, it was going to be Steph from Cupcake Project. And, she was right! It's quite wonderful, actually...besides the incredible texture, the flavor is of caramel, only less sweet and creamier. My husband hit the nail on the head when he said it tastes like a Werther's Original.

I've been eating spoonfuls all morning long! ;) Have a happy Tuesday!

My husband said, "ooooo" ::drool:: when I showed him this! We will definitely be making this! Question - how do you store it and for how long? I know most will eat the entire can in a day, but not in our house. LOL Thanks

I am so glad everyone loved the post! When I saw how easy {and super yummy} is was to make, I just couldn't help but share! :)

I transfered the dulce de leche to a plastic container and kept it in the refrigerator. It doesn't change the consistency at all and it'll last for weeks - although, I highly doubt there will be any left after a few days! ;) Hope this helps, Jason and Michelle!

I love homemade dulce de leche, but I cook mine only for 3.5 hours and then it's a bit too thick on one side and the rest is runny and darker than yours which looks divine and sooo much creamier. I think mine would be burnt after 8 hours of cooking, guess the problem must be with the sweetened condensed milk I use.

Oh the crockpot sounds like an amazing kitchen gadget if it can make something as delicious as this. One day, I'm going to get myself one of those. Thanks for linking this up.
